Since the actual area of the circle lies between the areas of the inscribed and circumscribed polygons, the areas of the polygons give upper and lower bounds for the area of the circle. Archimedes approximated the area of a circle by using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the areas of two regular polygons: the polygon inscribed within the circle and the polygon within which the circle was circumscribed. The first calculation of π was done by Archimedes of Syracuse (287–212 BC), one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world. Pi (π) has been known for almost 4000 years-but even if we calculated the number of seconds in those 4000 years and calculated π to that number of places, we would still only be approximating its actual value. The world will celebrate the mathematical constant today at 1.59 pm.
A graphical interface guides the process and displays the results in real time.World Pi Day 2023 is being observed today, March 14, 2023. The new Custom Probe utility in PC-DMIS 2012 MR1 configures non-standard probes for measurement planning, from a custom stylus to a complex, hand-built probe cluster. A user can import a CAD model with embedded dimensional data into PC-DMIS, activate the ClearanceCube function, then click on a feature control frame and watch as the software automatically builds inspection plan features and dimensions. PC-DMIS 2012 MR1 offers improved Model-Based Definition support. PC-DMIS is used by the metrology industry for the collection, evaluation, management and presentation of manufacturing data to reduce scrap, improve throughput, reduce costs, and build lean manufacturing operations.
Both software programs offer new tools and improved features for inspection and measurement applications.
